LIKE A VIRGIN by Evaristus Ogbechie

The Nigerian government has recently signed a contract with the Monsanto group for GMOs or genetically modified seeds that will replace organic or natural maize seeds in the country. GMO seeds come with insecticides which can cause serious health problems to people when consumed and are known to permanently damage even soils making the subsequent growing of natural seeds impossible on the same farmlands. Anyone who is conversant with happenings around the world as regards food production, will tell you that, that singular move is a giant step in the wrong direction. Some countries banning GMO crops are Wales, Scotland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium’s Wallonia region, Italy, Cyprus, Austria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Luxemburg and Malta. However, products containing GMOs can still be sold in many of these countries. Russia is one country that has completely banned the sale of any seeds or products connected to GMOs. The internet is full of cases against the Monsanto group where cases have been settled against the group with damages running in the millions of dollars against them. Does it mean that the Nigerian government is not aware of the dangers that this collaboration will cause the people and the environment of Nigeria? Is this the reason why the government has not been doing enough to stop the Islamic terrorism mostly against the areas of the country where farming is most viable? Benue state is the agricultural hub of the country and coincidentally has been the worst hit by Islamic terrorists.

The Monsanto group which reportedly has about 80 percent of total GMO production in the world has been making deals with several poor countries where corruption becomes an enabler for such hazardous deals. Kenya is another African country where GMOs have been allowed. When I heard the news of the Nigeria Monsanto deal, I wasn’t personally surprised. I knew it was a matter of time. Mr. Bill Gates who used to have a 23 million dollars worth of shares he bought back in 2010, but which he has since reportedly sold, was the first foreigner to visit President Tinubu after his inauguration as president. Remember that visit he had in company of his friend and Nigeria’s favorite son, Aliko Dangote? Our leaders should learn to stop letting the common good of Nigeria’s citizens suffer in the hands of their selfish interests. It is remarkable to note here that Bill Gates has bought the Heineken beer and that his Microsoft group recently invested about 1.1 billion dollars in Coca cola and Pepsi Meanwhile, some research carried out recently has shown the presence of nanotechnology particles in these drinks now. Not to mention the billions of dollars the philanthropist has so far spent on providing vaccines around the African continent and the world at large. Evidently, some folks love Africa till death. We should force our sometimes unreasonable leaders to learn to resist certain love advances. Sometimes, one needs to just say “No”. Learn to act like a virgin.
